WHAT'S TRENDING IN AMERICAN CRAFT BEER SHOWCASED AT THE GREAT AMERICAN BEER FESTIVAL • Lotte Peplow, Brewers Association's American Craft Beer Ambassador for Europe, chases down the latest trends in American craft brewing following her experience at the recent Great American Beer Festival.

THE “SIREN OF STOUT” HAS A GIFT FOR STORYTELLING • Barb Baker's passion for craft beer is palpable, but it's a passion that is also backed by a wealth of knowledge, hard work, and a desire to welcome others into the fold. Joya Taft-Dick had the honour of speaking with the self-labeled “Siren of Stout” about her road to becoming a “craft beer ambassador” and what she hopes to see evolve in the industry.

THE INSTITUTE OF BREWING & DISTILLING: WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME? • IN THIS ARTICLE, STUART HOWE – TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT MANAGER AT THE INSTITUTE OF BREWING & DISTILLING – WEIGHS IN ON WHAT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR BEGINNING OR EVEN MORE ADVANCED BREWERS LOOKING TO BOLSTER THEIR BEER EDUCATION, AND HOW AN IBD QUALIFICATION SPECIFICALLY CAN SUPPORT LONG-TERM SUCCESS IN THE FIELD.

SOUTH AFRICANS JUDGING ABROAD • Not only are South Africans brewing abroad – as Lucy Corne captures in her feature – but they are also judging at renowned beer festivals and competitions, from the US to Europe. We thought we'd hear from two of those who ventured north to share their talent and passion with the world. Troye May, founder of Beer School and the podcast Beer Time, shared a few reflections on his time spent at the Great American Beer Festival (an event you can read more about in Lottee Peplow's feature), and On Tap spoke with Apiwe Nxusani-Mawela, well-known brewmaster and founder of Tolokazi Beer Co., about her experience at the European Beer Star in Germany.

EXPORT QUALITY • South Africa often looks to the rest of the world when it comes to brewing trends, and we tend to undervalue our beer industry's worth on the global stage. But our contribution to the world's beer scene runs deeper than a few hop exports and the notion of adding rooibos to a brew. Lucy Corne chats to eight South African brewers who have taken their skills overseas.

THE CRAFT BEER SCENE IN NAIROBI IS NASCENT AND GROWING • Joya Taft-Dick recently had the pleasure of scoping out the growing craft beer scene in Nairobi. It was a brief trip, but an inspiring one, which included sitting down with Eoin Flinn, CEO of 254 Brewing Co., and getting a fascinating overview of this city's beer landscape.

THE IRRESISTIBLE ALLURE OF BEER AND ICE CREAM

SUMMER FRUIT ICE CREAM WITH SOUR BEER • This recipe is a great way to use overripe (*read forgotten) fruit.

WHAT MAKETH A BEER STYLE AND SHOULD SOUTH AFRICA HAVE ONE? • Considering the existence of such beer styles as the Czech Premium Pale Lager, or the New Zealand Pilsner, why doesn't South Africa have its own? Craig Claassen reached out to some beer and style experts in an effort to explore that very question.

THREE ROOKIE CRAFT BEER MARKETING ERRORS & HOW TO AVOID THEM • IN MY WORK WITH CRAFT BREWERS, I'VE ENCOUNTERED SEVERAL COMMON MISTAKES...
