We love July • July is an island floating between the joy of June and the slightly fatigued month of August. It’s a grown-up month: the year has shrugged off its adolescent exuberances, the weather is (hopefully) warm enough for ice cream to be one of your five a day, the sea should be swimmable without (too much) danger of hypothermia and thoughts will be of holiday shenanigans and family barbecues. School’s out this month, the next tranche of glorious summer colour is washing across our borders and it’s my birthday. Lots of reasons to give three rousing cheers for July!

Expert’s choice Lavenders • The old-favourite cultivars are fine plants, but look beyond them and this sun-loving genus gets even better, says Graham Rice

FREE strawberries with every order of alstroemerias

The Full Monty • Money can buy you the world’s most wonderful garden, but not horticultural happiness. For that, all you need is a little space, some plants and plenty of passion, says Monty

Have your say • The view from your side of the fence

Standard lilac tree

Over the fence • Should artificial lights be banned from the garden?

Digging deeper • Putting the spotlight on the biggest issues in gardening today

2 for 1 Gardens Literary legends • Each of our 2 for 1 Gardens has its own story to tell. This month, we’re leafing through gardens that have inspired celebrated authors, playwrights and poets

Container of the month • Brighten up a garden corner with fiery red and orange blooms, and contrasting strappy foliage

3 issues for £5 • Subscribe to BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine and get your first 3 issues for only £5†, then pay £27.60 every 6 issues thereafter, saving 32% on the usual price

Nerine • Early-autumn colour usually comes from a small number of old favourites, but make a little space for this lesser known sun-lover and it will pay you back many times over, says Andrew Timothy O’Brien

Border boosters • July sees the stars of early summer shine and fade, but a few clever planting additions made now will carry your garden through to a glorious late crescendo, says Monty

Nature knows best • Carol Klein explains how to choose plants for specific growing conditions, based on what has naturally adapted to thrive there

The dry and mighty garden • As we adapt our gardens to a more volatile climate, Alan Titchmarsh reveals how to create a drought-tolerant plot and picks his top plant performers

Alan’s favourites • Beat the heat with these six drought-tolerant stalwarts

How to care for a dry garden • Treat a dry area very much as you would when planning any other part of your garden, looking at its shape and structure, and planting it up for year-round interest and form

Greening up a city balcony • Looking for sustainable, small-space gardening ideas? Take inspiration from Oliver Hymans’ transformed balcony garden in north-east London – now a lush, green haven for humans and wildlife

Secrets of a COLOURFUL GARDEN • Buildings and landscapes can play a vital role in supercharging your space, as Nick Bailey demonstrates

Upcycled outdoor living • Create unique and stylish garden features for minimal...
