IN GREAT CARE • Every boat has a story, but every caretaker does too.

STARTING LINE

ALWAYS TOGETHER IN THE BVI • With an entourage to witness, the Cal 25 masters of Lake St. Clair unlock the speed of their bareboat to claim the championship.

ALONE, BUT NOT ALONE • The purpose remains true, but the goal and the yacht are much different for this second attempt at the Mini Transat Race.

HERE COMES SUNSHINE • The annual Round the County Race is a unique and beloved Pacific Northwest affair, if not for the beauty, but for its allure.

TO THE TOP, THE HARD WAY • Trucking a large keelboat to a faraway regatta has its challenges, but for this class champ, the experience is always greater than the hassle.

AMERICAN MAGIC EXITS THE CUP • The two-time New York YC challenger didn’t buy what the 38th America’s Cup Defender and Challenger of Record were selling, so they’re spending their money elsewhere.

THE FINAL VOYAGE OF MAGIC BUS • A routine delivery to the Bahamas turns into the learning experience of a lifetime for this young crew of racing sailors. And one heck of ride.

THE LEGACY OF THE NO-NAME SCOW • A chicken coop discovery ignites a lifelong passion for small-boat restoration and racing and a retirement side hustle.

FINISHING TOUCHES • The long and meticulous rebuild of a Melges 30 started with structural and cosmetic dirty work, then came the hardware, and finally the electronic bling to make the old girl competitive again.

THE GOLDEN PACKET • As a talented and experienced sailor who’s been racing and winning in J/24s almost as long as they’ve been around, Tony Parker is the full package.

SAILING WORLD’S 2025 BOAT OF THE YEAR • The server hands me a pile of white paper napkins. I am crammed into a high-backed booth inside a strip-mall barbeque joint in Annapolis, Md., alongside our Boat of the Year judges: Monica Morgan, Mike Ingham and Dobbs Davis. Between them and Erik Shampain earlier in the year, they have sailed 17 new boats in two sessions and talked about them for hours. It’s decision time, but here at the table, they cannot all agree on an overall winner. Before they even get to look at the dessert menu, they have to agree. That’s the rule. Votes are cast, and the nod, 2-1, goes to the ClubSwan 28, a sophisticated sportboat that sold the judges across the basic criteria: what it’s for, how it’s built and ultimately how it sails on its test day. The ClubSwan 28, the judges agree, checks all the boxes. Not to steal its thunder, four other boats do as well, but there can be one Boat of the Year.

SHOOTER SELECTS

WHAT’S APPARENT ABOUT CLEAR AIR • A little understanding of apparent wind will go a long way to keep it clean and fast.

THE FORGOTTEN “PY” FLEETS • Handicap racing for big boats gets a lot of attention, but the smaller world of handicap dinghy racing is where more attention should be focused.
